Every Month we pick a Student from the Academy as ‘Student of the Month’ and asked them a few questions of how has Gracie Jiu-Jitsu benefited them in their life mentally and physically as well as what impact has it made in their lifestyle so far. Many of our students come from a variety of different backgrounds and each with a different goal but ultimately, to learn the number one most important thing, SELF-DEFENSE, as most fights will most likely end up on the ground willingly or unwillingly.
The student for this month is our Kimura Hunter, Azahar! Read our interview with him below to get to know this dangerous dude better. You’ve been warned! :p

1. INTRODUCE YOURSELF.
I am a dad to 2 kids, I like to eat so I have to exercise and I like to fight. on my free time, I like to make burgers, read comics, play video games and go to the library. Nowadays, most of my time, I try to be with the family.
2. HOW AND WHY DID YOU START JIU-JITSU?
I started to explore jiujitsu as I dabble mostly in striking and knew groundwork was my weakness and it so happened that my cousin had opened a CTC, so I wanted to support him as well as try jiujitsu. after the trial lesson, which was the Punch block series 1-4, I signed up, without even completing the 10 day trial.
3. WHAT DO YOU ENJOY MOST ABOUT GRACIE JIU-JITSU?
I enjoy getting comfortable being uncomfortable. Learning jiujitsu puts me on my back a lot and right now, I am quite comfortable on my back compared to before jiujitsu, although there is still so much to learn. I also like that every time I come to class, there is always something new that I did not notice, like a small detail in the technique , that makes a huge difference in the execution .

4. WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE TECHNIQUE?
3 Techniques… Elevator sweep, Punch block series and the Kimura Armlock.
5. WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO SOMEONE WHO’S STARTING OUT JIU-JITSU?
Just give it a shot, stick to it and learn at your own pace.

6. HOW HAS GRACIE JIU-JITSU BENEFITED YOU?
It has definitely made me a more confident person. It has also made me a more relaxed person when confronted with problems.
7. FAVOURITE QUOTE/PHILOSOPHY?
“You cant control the ocean but you can learn to surf, you cant control a person’s aggression, but you can learn jiujitsu.”

10. FINALLY, I WANT TO SAY?
Thank you to the wife for taking care of the kids while I am away on jiujitsu nights. Also, to all at the CTC, thank you for all the guidance and fun rolls. To the head instructor, Danial, great job at the CTC and thanks a million for nominating me.
